Convocation to Feature University Professor, Student Congress President

Gian Pagnucci, University Professor, will serve as master of ceremonies for the 2009 Freshman Convocation, planned for August 30 at 5:30 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium. Samuel Heastie, a member of the educational leadership faculty at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina, the keynote speaker for IUP’s inaugural Freshman Convocation in 2006, will return to IUP to present the Convocation keynote address.

The hour-long program also will feature remarks by Alyssa Stiles, president of IUP’s Student Government Association, and IUP President Tony Atwater. Audio from the convocation will be broadcast into the Oak Grove again this year. All members of the community are encouraged to come together for a cookout and festival in the Oak Grove immediately following the event.

Keynote speaker Heastie is president and chief executive officer of Heastie Consulting. The company’s primary focus is training, and Heastie draws on his academic training and experiences to design, develop, and conduct training programs in human resources, customer service, management, and education for businesses, schools, community organizations, and churches.

The Nassau, Bahamas, native graduated from Freed-Hardeman University and taught high school in the Bahamas for several years before returning to the U.S. to continue his education. He earned his master’s degree at La Salle University and his doctoral degree at West Virginia University. He served as special assistant to the president for diversity at Grove City College before going to Fayetteville.
