Zanich to Serve as Interim Dean

Mary Lou Zanich has been tapped by Provost Gerald Intemann to serve as the interim dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. She will begin her new role on July 1.

Zanich replaces John Eck, who will be stepping down as dean after serving twelve years in that position. He will be returning to the Department of Physics to pursue teaching and research as a faculty member.

Zanich began her tenure at IUP in 1977 as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology after completing her undergraduate and doctoral work in experimental psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. During her nearly thirty-two years at IUP, Zanich has achieved the rank of full professor and served as assistant chairperson of Psychology for nine years. She is the founding director of IUP’s Center for Teaching Excellence and held that directorship for four years. Since 1999, Zanich has served as the chairperson of the Department of Psychology.

Zanich is the author or coauthor of numerous research publications. She has been the recipient of the IUP Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. She has served on numerous universitywide and departmental committees and codeveloped the honors science core course for the Robert E. Cook Honors College. A member of several professional organizations, Zanich has had a leadership role with the Association for Women in Psychology.
