College of Education Entities Earn Program Grant Renewals

The grant that funds the Career and Technical Personnel and Preparation Center has been renewed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in the amount of $1,267,491.

The center, which has operated at IUP for more than thirty years, provides vocational teacher certification in Western Pennsylvania. It also offers professional development and in-service activities for current technical educators. Directed by Donald Gamble, the center is housed in the College of Education and Educational Technology.

The funding for two programs in the college also was renewed. The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education has committed $277,875 to the Philadelphia Urban Seminar Initiative, an effort overseen by Larry Vold that sends education majors from IUP and other State System schools to a two-week intensive experience in urban teaching settings.

The State System also renewed its commitment for the R. Benjamin Wiley Partnership Program, a multiyear outreach program overseen by Melvin Jenkins that prepares urban high school students from Pennsylvania for college. The renewal grant is for a total of $131,000.
