Study Abroad

Spend a year in Switzerland after completing the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters of the IUP Culinary Arts program. The Culinary Institute Switzerland (CIS) is uniquely located in both the French and German regions of Switzerland.

The campuses offer small, hands-on classes and facilities with up-to-date technology.

Twelve-Month European Study and Externship Program

Application to and acceptance by CIS are required.

  • Attend classes for six months at Culinary Institute Switzerland on the Lucerne Campus in Switzerland.
  • Learn the ins and outs of European cuisine along with baking and pastry skills.
  • Learn Swiss and European standards as set by rating agencies such as Michelin Star and Gault-Millau Guides.
  • Federal and personal loans are available to qualified persons to help finance this program. Some upfront costs are required. Contact for more information on costs.

For the final six months of the CIS program:

  • You will work in one of Switzerland’s finest restaurants to fulfill both the IUP and CIS externship requirements.
  • Gain European culinary industry experience.
  • You will also earn an additional 21 credits from IUP which can be applied toward your Hospitality Management B.S. degree at IUP.

Successful completion of both the IUP Culinary Arts curriculum and the 12-month European Study and Externship program will give you a total of 63 credits toward your Hospitality Management degree at IUP (42 credits from the IUP culinary arts program; 21 credits from the twelve-month CIS program).

Spring Break in Switzerland

This noncredit study tour is led by IUP chef instructors and includes hands-on European culinary classes and sightseeing.

  • Eight days, all inclusive (airfaire from Pittsburgh, all meals, all ground transportation, all fees). Optional: Spending money for personal items and souvenirs.

The availability of this program is solely dependent upon the interest of a sufficient number of culinary students.

Study Abroad program costs are in addition to the culinary arts instructional costs and fees. Participation in the CIS program will extend the total time required for completion of the Culinary Arts program.
