Fredalene Bowers has been a member of the Child Development and Family Relations faculty at IUP since 1998. She has served on numerous universitywide committees: University Senate, Senate Rules Committee; University Promotions Committee/chairperson; University Sabbatical Committee; University Council of Chairs; Undergraduate Curriculum Committee; and currently the Middle States Accreditation Steering Committee and Sub-Committee cochair. She has also been active on local and state committees: Indiana County Child Advisory Committee/Co-Chairperson; Early Care and Education Committee; ARIN's PPT Advisory Board; Bright Horizons Recruitment Advisory Board; and Southwest PA Key Higher Education Committee; Infant-Toddler coursework & Credential Workgroup; PA Director's Credential Workgroup; PA Infant-Toddler Network; and OCDEL Family, Friends, & Neighbor Committee.

Bowers has received grants from the U.S. Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. She has been published in Child Care Exchange Journal and Journal of Correctional Education, and has written training manuals for the Pennsylvania Department of Education. She has presented at international, national, and statewide conferences on topics as varied as social media in higher education, grantwriting, and early childhood education. She is a trainer and consultant for schools and agencies that include a certified PQAS (Pennsylvania Quality Assurance Systems) trainer and a Pennsylvania Student Assistance Program trainer. She participated in a study tour of the Reggio Emilio Schools, Reggio Emilio, Italy, and incorporates this philosophy in her teaching and training sessions.

Bowers has been recognized for her teaching, advising, and mentoring with several IUP awards: 2016 College of Health and Human Services Service Award;  2013 IUP Distinguished University Faculty Award for Teaching; 2013 President’s Grantsmanship Award; 2008–09 Academic Advising Award, Center for Teaching Excellence; 2003–04 Outstanding Teacher Award for Teaching Excellence, College of Health and Human Services; and the 2003–04 Content Pedagogy Award, Center for Teaching Excellence. In addition, she has been recognized by the IUP African American Cultural Center for student support and selected as a mentor for several IUP Mortar Board students. She is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.
