Dr. Demond Mullins, Research Associate

Dr. Demon MullinsDr. Demond Mullins , an assistant professor of Sociology at IUP, joined MARTI as a research associate in 2013. He is a sociologist whose primary research interest is veteran reintegration. His dissertation, titled “Veteran Role Salience and Reintegration,” explored the relationship between student engagement and military culture among student veterans attending the City University of New York. 

Dr. Mullins is an Iraq veteran, having served as a cavalry scout/infantryman with the 1st Cavalry in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004–2005. He has been and continues to be an active member of the veterans’ community. In 2007, he served as a staffer on Veterans’ Affairs for then-Senator Barack Obama. During his tenure in the Senator’s legislative office, Dr. Mullins worked primarily on health and education policy pertaining to military veterans, with particular emphasis on the Defense Authorization of 2008.  

Dr. Mullins has held the position of national spokesman and lobbyist for Iraq Veterans Against the War (2006–2007), and he has served as a founding board member of Veterans Green Jobs, a 501c3 addressing veteran employment issues by training veterans for, and placing them in, a host of occupations in the green sector. Currently, Dr. Mullins is deeply involved with Veterans Expeditions, an organization that facilitates wilderness expeditions for veterans.

Dr. Mullins is serving as a MARTI research associate through his membership to the interdisciplinary Veterans’ Reintegration Program at IUP.
