IUP Community Music SchoolThe IUP Community Music School, located in Cogswell Hall, provides noncredit private lessons, ensembles, and classes in music year-round to students of all ages in the Indiana community and region.

From the Director:

Welcome to the IUP Community Music School! The fall 2018 semester marks the start of our sixth year.

What is exciting is that, for all six years, we have literally grown every semester. In our estimation, this is due to three reasons, with the primary reason being the high quality of instruction by teachers at all levels. Whether a teaching apprentice, teaching artist, or an IUP music faculty member, one of the most frequent compliments we receive is the high level of teaching by our instructors.

The second reason we continue to grow is that through some very generous underwriting and support from a number of sponsors, we are able to keep the pricing as affordable as possible. These include IUP Dining, S&T Bank, and the generous gifts by community members Kay B. Smith and Ann G. Wilmoth, as well as others. Without their critical support the program would not be possible.

We’ve also fielded a number of inquiries from individuals who simply want to make a gift to support the school. Ask and you shall receive! The link below went active on December 1 and is set up so individuals can give directly to the IUP Community Music School. We are continually working to keep the costs down and build a scholarship fund for deserving students, and donations of any amount support these efforts.

Give to the IUPCMS

The third reason for continued growth is that we continue to listen to your comments, ideas, and suggestions, and continue to make changes and improvements. For example, many of you provided feedback that you had to pick which of your children participated in our Crimson Youth Choir, or that you simply couldn’t come up with the $100 per semester.

Exclusivity is not what the IUP Community Music School is about, so we listened and are excited to announce that, starting this fall, we’ve cut the price IN HALF for our Crimson Youth Choir. Between the new price of only $50 for the semester, the scholarship program, and the amazing teaching by the director, Kye-Won Kopko, we’re looking for this group to continue to grow and become one of the premiere ensembles for youth in our region. Be sure to tell your friends!

There is a tremendous amount of published research showing the benefits of studying music, whether on brain development, improved critical thinking skills, or the ability to collaborate with others, to name a few. While I don’t anticipate us becoming a tweeting organization anytime soon (we think there’s enough tweeting going on out there already!), be sure to check out and “Like” our FaceBook page, not only for some of the articles, but also for the fun, interesting, and meaningful stories on music we run across.

Whether you’re young and just starting in music, or older and have been away from it for a while, the IUPCMS is the perfect and affordable place to find your way in the amazing world of music. Whether through a class, ensemble, or simply some private lessons, the IUPCMS will help you obtain your musical goals.

As always, if you have feedback, please feel free to email it to We’re looking forward to meeting the musical needs of the music teachers and community members in the Indiana regions for many years to come!

Best wishes as we begin the 2018–19 academic year.

Registration Notes:

Note 1: As it is throughout the entire year, private lesson registration is flexible and ongoing throughout the semester; however, most students sign up for a full semester of lessons, or nearly the full semester, depending on their various activities, schedules, etc.

Note 2: The crimson “Register Now” found throughout the website is only for students new to the IUP Community Music School. Anyone who has been a student in the past should simply email to let us know what you would like to register for, and with any other inquiries.
If the “Register Now” button does not work for you, please immediately email and let us know.

Note 3: The IUP Community Music School assesses a $25 registration fee per individual student, per semester, for the fall and spring semesters. The fee is reduced to $20 for the summer session. This fee supports a very small portion of the total administrative costs associated with running the school.
