Pre-Conference Activity

In addition to our scheduled conference presentations, we also will be hosting a Friday evening showing of Intersecting Sparks, a documentary produced by Dr. Mary Beth Leidman, a faculty member of the Communications Media Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

About the Executive Producer

Dr. Mary Beth Leidman is a long-time faculty member in the Department of Communications Media at IUP.  She has more than three dozen publications and presentations on topics that include children’s media, media criticism, communication and society, and international communications.  Being an academic has allowed Dr. Leidman to not only engage in scholarly pursuits, but also to lead a successful career in broadcast media production and on-air interviewing.  By her own admittance, Dr. Leidman loves to teach, but she also loves to create, and she continues to contribute to the field of communications media through her roles both as an academic and as a media professional.

About the Documentary

Poster: Intersecting Sparks: Art and Science, Research and ImaginationOne of Dr. Leidman’s most recent endeavors is as executive producer of the documentary Intersecting Sparks: Art and Science, Research and Imagination, which portrays the story of Israeli sculptor and geophysicist Dr. Michael Lazar.  The documentary premiered March 14, 2013, at the Johnstown Jewish Community Heritage Project.  Dr. Lazar splits his time and vocations into two parts, the sum of which equals greater than 100 percent.  Half of his life he toils in an art studio as a cold metal sculptor.  The other fifty percent is spent researching and exploring ancient rocks in search of answers which will predict the future.

Conference attendees are invited to join us for this occasion, and refreshments will be served after the showing.
