The solemn ringing of a bell is heard and a funeral cortege slowly enters. “Marley was dead to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that.”

And so begins Charles Dickens’ classic tale of redemption, told with magical wonder by the many characters of Dicken’s London just in time for the holidays. Puppetry and spectacle abound in this fast-paced rendition that surprises at every turn.

“You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato,” says Scrooge to the specter of Marley’s ghost warning him of his own mortal peril. Visited by three ghosts of past, present, and future, Scrooge is confronted by death differently than his poor employee Bob Cratchet. What does Cratchet have that Scrooge needs?

By Charles Dickens; Adapted by Ed Simpson; Directed by Brian Jones
