All members of the IUP community—faculty, staff, and students—are invited to participate in the development of IUP’s Long-Range Facilities Master Plan Update.

The Long-Range Facilities Master Plan—and the updating process—is critically important to making decisions about the physical development of the Indiana campus. The master plan update includes a careful examination of how IUP is using its current space in order to create recommendations for the future of the Indiana campus facility footprint, so your input about current facility usage is essential.

IUP has contracted with the SmithGroup to assist us in this work. The SmithGroup, which has completed planning projects at more than 700 college campuses worldwide over the last four decades, developed our current Long-Range Master Plan in 2011 and updates to the plan in 2014 and 2017.

Representatives from the SmithGroup will visit IUP to gather input on April 24, 25, and 26.

There are two open sessions for employees:

Open student session for students:

  • Wednesday, April 26
    11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (during the Common Hour)
    Jane Leonard Hall, room 225

Indiana area community stakeholders also will be invited to be part of work sessions with the SmithGroup visiting team during the process.

In addition to in-person meetings, you may be asked to complete online surveys as part of the information gathering process. There will also be Zoom meetings for various committees and groups beginning this month and throughout the process in which you may be invited to participate. Information and updates will be posted on the Long-Range Campus Master Plan Update web page.

Becoming an even more student-centered university is at the center of this process, and everyone’s voice is important. This is your opportunity to provide input on IUP’s physical plant, especially how it can be developed to optimize space usage in order to provide appropriate facility support to student success and to our current and anticipated university needs. The more information we gather, the more accurate and representative our master plan will be of our university community and vision for the future.

We anticipate that the SmithGroup will present the completed master plan update to the IUP Council of Trustees in December. This update will include a number of alternative development scenarios for the Indiana campus, including dashboard visualizations that optimize space usage and incorporate the outcomes of space utilization and future needs. This update also will identify existing spaces that could fit the needs of the proposed school of osteopathic medicine. There will be additional sessions in the fall, held in person and via Zoom, to review draft scenarios prior to the completion of the master plan, and further input at those sessions will be gathered and incorporated into the final product.

As your schedules permit, we ask for your active and thoughtful participation. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Steve Markiewicz, associate director, senior project manager, and planner, at smarkiew@iup.edu.
