The information below was published March 16. As details are changing quickly, please visit the Coronavirus Information page for current information.

Dear IUP Students,

A month ago, I had planned to send you a “welcome back after spring break” message, a tradition I have enjoyed during my time working with students.

Unfortunately, these times are anything but traditional.

Earlier today, President Driscoll sent you a message letting you know that all classes will transition to online delivery by March 23 and students living in the residence halls need to move out by Saturday, March 21.

I echo the sentiment that he expressed in his message. This is NOT the way I envisioned the spring 2020 semester, and I know you had other hopes and plans as well. I will miss seeing you around campus. However, these are changes we must make for your health and safety and for the health and safety of our community.

This remains unchanged – we will do all that we can to keep you informed and support you as we work together through these challenging times.

Here is information about several vital campus services that will be particularly important over the next several days and weeks.

Health Services

The IUP Health Services office, located in the Center for Health and Well-Being, Suites on Maple East, is open and available to you. You can contact them at 724-357-2550 or by email at health-inquiry@iup.edu. They are the best place to contact should you have questions or concerns or feel ill. Of course, if it is an emergency, please call 9-1-1. If you believe you may have the virus, please let health officials know before going to a doctor's office or emergency room.

Counseling Center

The IUP Counseling Center is available by calling 724-357-2621 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Walk-in hours at the center are Monday through Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. If you have an immediate need for mental health support after traditional business hours, please call 9-1-1 or the Indiana/Armstrong Mental Health Crisis line 1-877-333-2470.

If a friend or acquaintance is in distress, please reach out and let them know of the resources we have in place to offer assistance. You can also contact a member of IUP's Care Team of faculty and staff. This group provides appropriate support to students in distress.

Residence Halls

The Residence Life staff of IUP is organized and ready to support students during this time.

As a result of the University's recent announcement, residential students are required to move out of their residence hall space by 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 21.

IUP Housing has created a Move Out Form available via your MyIUP account (select: Campus Services, Housing Services, Forms, Move-Out Form). This form requests that you select a specific date and time frame for your check out. Please complete this form, so that we may monitor and control for the number of students and their families on campus at any given time. Available time frames are as follows:

  • Monday, March 16, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 17, through Friday March 20 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be a limited number of carts available to assist in your move. While moving out, students are required to remove all personal belongings and to take all trash to the dumpster located outside of the building. Once this is completed the student should return any applicable keys and check out at the hall office.

IUP Housing is here to support you. Although the residence halls are closing for the semester, if you need to secure on-campus housing due to emergency or extenuating circumstance, please complete the Housing Need Form available via your MyIUP account (select: Campus Services, Housing Services, Forms, Housing Need Form).

Custodial staff members have increased cleaning efforts, focusing heavily on disinfecting common touchpoints like doors, elevators, light switches, and bathrooms, amongst others. Staff are here to assist with questions and concerns about your on-campus housing. If you have any questions, please contact IUP Housing at iup-housing@iup.edu or by phone at 724-357-2696.

More Questions?

I know that you will have more questions as we work through this time together. You can direct general questions to the IUP Hawks email account at iup-hawks@iup.edu. While social media can be an excellent tool to bring people together, it is also the source of misinformation and rumors that can be frightening. Please continue to consult the IUP website for IUP updates, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and the Pennsylvania Department of Health websites for information about the coronavirus.

I will continue to be in touch with updates and information as they become known.

I wish you good health.

Sincerely,

Dr. Segar
