IUP Office of Extended Studies, Infragard Pittsburgh, and S&T Bank to Present Cyber Security Seminar

Indiana University of Pennsylvania's Office of Extended Studies, InfraGard Pittsburgh, and S&T Bank will present “Securing Our Region: A Cyber Security Seminar” on June 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex, 711 Pratt Drive.

James Kitchen, assistant United States attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, is the keynote speaker for the program. Kitchen will discuss “An Update on Cyber Threats.”

Kitchen has been in his current role for the past 13 years, currently serving in the Western District of Pennsylvania as the national security cyber specialist, Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council coordinator, and the deputy chief of the National Security and Cyber Crime Section of the office.

Since being in Pittsburgh, he has led several notable cyber investigations, including those leading to pending indictments against five officers of the Chinese People's Liberation Army who hacked into six American companies, the indictment and arrest of the anonymized-e-mail bomb perpetrator at the University of Pittsburgh, and the shutdown of the Darkode criminal hacking forum as well as the conviction of several of its members.

In addition to an overview of the cyber threat by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kitchen, presenters will discuss social media leaks and security; the “insider threat;” and cyber fraud and creative collaborations to combat it.

In 2016, experts say that the average computer is probed more than once per second by an external entity unless it is in a protected network. This program is intended to offer increased awareness and understanding of cyber threats to make the region more resilient to cyber incidents and work to prevent individuals and businesses from becoming victim to cyber threats.

The agenda for the day is as follows:

• 9:05 a.m. – keynote speaker Kitchen, providing “An Update on Cyber Threats”
• 9:45 a.m. – “Cyber Fraud: Creative Collaborations Combating Cyber Crime,” presented by Daniel Larkin, director of Fraud Prevention, PNC Enterprise Fraud Group
• 10:30 a.m. – “Insider Threat: The Main Cyber Threat to Your Company,” presented by Jonathan Brown, CEO, Anthracite
• 11:00 a.m. – “Social Media: Finding Weak Links and Improving Security,” presented by Stephanie Sjoberg, information security and compliance analyst, Giant Eagle
• 11:30 a.m. – Cyber Threat panel discussion and question and answer session with regional industry partners: Trebor Evans, chief information security officer and senior vice president at Dollar Bank; Paul Grieggs, IUP IT security manager; Scott Deutsch, manager of communications and special programs, National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining; and Michelle Pirtle, special agent, FBI.

The day concludes at 12:15 p.m. with final remarks.

Attendees who participate in the full event will receive a certificate for three educational contact hours from InfraGard and two Continuing Education Units (CEU) from IUP for completion of this training.

Kevin Dodds, S&T Bank's board-appointed chief information security officer, responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of S&T's security program, will serve as master of ceremonies for the event.

Prior to joining S&T, Dodds served for more than 31 years in federal law enforcement, 28 of those years as a special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. He was assigned to various positions in the U.S. and overseas. He also served in joint duty assignments at the National Joint Terrorism Task Force, National Counterterrorism Center, and the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence.

His executive appointments at NCIS include executive assistant director for combating terrorism, assistant director for information technology, chief information officer, and chief of strategic planning, communications, and policy. During his tenure at NCIS, he was appointed to the Defense Intelligence Senior Level Executive Service and was a commissioned senior intelligence officer in the Intelligence Community Senior Leadership Corps.

More about the speakers and panelists:

• Jonathan Brown holds a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in Public and International Affairs, with a focus in security and intelligence studies and a specialization in cyber intelligence. He completed an internship at the National Cyber Forensics Training Alliance in Pittsburgh and then went on to serve at the CIA in the Information Operations Center as an all source intelligence analyst. He transitioned to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service as a supervisory intelligence specialist and, while still at NCIS, held additional positions such as cyber-counterintelligence subject matter expert and deputy assistant director for the cyber analysis group. Moving into the private sector, Brown managed the cyber threat intelligence team at Capital One and is now the CEO of his own company, focusing on cyber threat intelligence and dark web collection to support small businesses.

• Daniel J. Larkin established the first Cyber Fusion Unit for the federal government, enabling the government and law enforcement to effectively co-locate with subject experts (SME) from industry and academia, substantially enhancing resource sharing (personnel, technology, and intelligence) to the mutual benefit of all participants. This unique collaborative effort has also helped build crucial cross-sector trusted relationships as a vital foundation of this alliance. As the FBI unit chief of the Internet Crime Complaint Center, Larkin expanded the focus of this project to include hundreds of SMEs from industry and academia as major contributors of both intelligence and exceptional analytical skills. He also directed the development and successful completion of numerous international cybercrime initiatives, resulting in more than 500 arrests and millions of dollars in seizures. In addition, Larkin founded the National Cyber Forensic and Training Alliance, which brings together hundreds of cross-sector SMEs to collaborate in the ongoing fight against global cyber-crime. An IUP graduate, Larkin was honored with the IUP Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008.

• Stephanie Sjoberg has been in the cyber security field for five years and has experience in both physical and cyber security, and enjoys doing incident response and education and awareness training. She developed her foundation in cyber security as a technical security analyst at United States Steel Corporation. Prior to cyber security, she created user accounts and assisted with security requests on the Identity and Protection Services Team. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science from the School of Information Sciences.

• Michelle Pirtle has been with the FBI for 13 years and is currently based out of the Pittsburgh field office as an FBI private sector coordinator overseeing the InfraGard programs in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. With a master's in computer science, her experience has centered on cyber investigations and the cyber threat landscape. Her investigative experience has included criminal and national security matters, both stateside and internationally, and she currently works to secure our nation's critical infrastructures through collaborative relationships and information sharing. The cyber and physical threats to our nation's critical infrastructure are the focal points of her outreach with industry, academia, and government.

• Paul Grieggs is responsible for IT security, networking, and systems architecture. He has 30 years of IT experience. He was the founding director of IUP's IT Security Office in 2015. Prior to his current position, he served as technical services manager at IUP and was responsible for networks, central systems, telecommunications, and IT security. Before joining IUP, he served as a technical consultant specializing in communication systems in the banking and health insurance industries. He has a bachelor's degree in business administration from St. Bonaventure University.

• Scott Deutsch joined NCDMM in September 2012 with the responsibility for a variety of the enterprise communications initiatives. He manages all aspects of the organization's external communications to such mediums as web, social media, public relations, print, trade shows, and other special outreach programs and events. Deutsch is a skilled marketing and creative professional with more than 25 years of experience. He has worked primarily in the high-tech manufacturing world as an independent consultant, marketing/communications manager, and creative director. Throughout his career, he has been a leader in marketing products and services to a wide range of industries using all of the tools of the modern marketer. Prior to joining NCDMM, he served as manager, North America Marketing and Communications, for Kennametal within a global marketing team.

• In his current role, Trebor Evans securely enables the business by managing risk in alignment with the company's strategic goals. His 26 years of IT experience present from a variety of roles, including server administration, enterprise desktop management, large scale IT project management, security operations, and information security. Vertical industries prior to banking include education management, healthcare, and health insurance. He is an online adjunct professor for graduate courses in IT and cyber security for Southern New Hampshire University. He earned a leadership PhD from Robert Morris University and holds an MBA and a BS in IT from South University. Current academic pursuits include Advanced Banking School through an association between Penn State and the American Banking Association. The InfraGard Pittsburgh Members Alliance (IPMA) consists of a growing membership of professionals who are creating a more resilient critical infrastructure in western Pennsylvania.

Its membership includes representatives from 16 critical infrastructures, including the chemical, information technology, water supply systems, energy, emergency services, healthcare and public health, transportation, finance, and telecommunications sectors. Membership is voluntary yet exclusive and is comprised of individuals from both the public and private sector. The main goal of IPMA is to promote ongoing communication, education, and community outreach between the public and private sectors and the FBI to share information, strengthen relationships, and protect vital assets.
