The Veterans Organization student group will sponsor a spaghetti dinner from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. April 30, 2011, at the Indiana VFW Post 1989 to raise money for three scholarships. The VFW is at 824 Indian Springs Road in White Township.
The event benefits memorial scholarships in honor of Brent Adams, Beverly Sue Clark, and Eric Slebodnik. Assisting with the preparation of the dinner will be the Indiana County Technology Center. The menu will include spaghetti, bread, salad, and a dessert.
Sergeant Adams was a casualty of a roadside bombing in Iraq on December 1, 2005.
He joined the Army National Guard as a college student in 1987 and graduated from IUP with a degree in regional planning in 1995. In Iraq, he supervised mechanics who repaired military vehicles. His family, in West View, near Pittsburgh, includes a wife and son.
Beverly Sue Clark, of Armagh, was killed in action in Iraq during the Gulf War.
Specialist Slebodnik was one of five Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers killed in a roadside bombing near Ramadi, Iraq, on September 28, 2005. He was 21 at the time.
When Slebodnik was deployed, he was a junior History major with a minor in Political Science. While a student at IUP, he was a student caller for the IUP annual-giving program. Slebodnik's family lives in Carbondale.
Tickets for the dinner are $10 for adults and $8 for IUP students. They are are on sale at the Veterans' Student Liaison Office in Pratt Suites, Room 104. Office hours are Monday, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Tuesday, 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.; Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; and Thursday, 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Tickets may also be obtained by e-mailing Michael Rifendifer, Veterans Organization president, at M.R.Rifendifer@iup.edu.
