Norm, IUP mascot, poses with donated items

Indiana University of Pennsylvania is partnering with the United Way of Indiana County for the second annual Hawk It for Good sale, and members of the community have a chance to participate in the fundraising event.

Hawk it for Good is Indiana's largest indoor yard sale. It will be held May 30 at the Indiana County fairgrounds, adjacent to the J.S. Mack Community Center (Mack Park), from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Hawk it for Good will offer hundreds of new or gently used items donated by IUP students and area residents for sale at discounted prices.

Funds raised from the sale will benefit the United Way of Indiana County and the programs and services of its member agencies.

Items available include clothing and shoes, furniture and decorative items, toys, appliances and electronics in working order, bedding, athletic equipment, and carpets.

The Hawk it for Good committee is seeking volunteers to help sort donated items. Interested persons or social or civic groups can contact the United Way at (724) 463-0277.

“We had an outstanding event last year, and we're excited to get even bigger this year,” said Pat Leach, Hawk it for Good event chairperson. “Last year, students were very generous in donating items, including a great deal of clothing new with tags.

Leach recognized the support of the IUP community, particularly the IUP Residence Life Association and its student community advisors and resident advisors, the Office of Housing and Residence Life, and the IUP Facilities Operations staff.

IUP staff members collected donated items from IUP students in the residence halls through May 3, when the halls closed for the semester.

“An event of this magnitude takes a great deal of cooperation and teamwork to execute. We hope that members of the community come out to enjoy the event, recycle some very nice items, and support the United Way of Indiana County,” Leach said.

The event's honorary chairperson is Norm, IUP's Crimson Hawk mascot. Event organizers named the program “hawk” it for good in Norm's honor.

Those wishing to enter the sale early may pay an extra $5 to be an “early hawk,” also known as an early bird shopper, between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m.

Refreshments will be available for purchase during the sale. All proceeds from refreshment sales benefit Boy Scout Troop 11, Penn's Woods Council.
