Indiana University of Pennsylvania's Office of International Education will offer the 2009 Foreign Film and Music Series, its third annual series, starting Jan. 25.
The Indiana Theater, 637 Philadelphia St., will house the series, scheduled for Sunday evenings.
The series will include six different films and live musical performances that represent different countries. Live music will be performed at 5:30 and 8 p.m., and films will be shown at 6 and 8:30 p.m. All musical performances and films are free and open to the community, and all of the foreign-language films have English subtitles.
The series opens Jan. 25 with guitarist and singer Terry Sabo, from Indiana. The movie is the French film “Persepolis,” an animated autobiography of Marjane Satrapi's childhood in Iran.
On Feb. 8, the musical performance will be by Carl Rahknonen, IUP professor, on fiddle. The film for the evening is “After the Wedding,” a Danish, Hindi and Swedish film. Directed by Susan Bier, the film is about a businessman who offers to make a donation to an Indian orphanage, but only if specific conditions are met.
“Curse of the Golden Flower” will be screened on Feb. 22, and the musician is guitarist Mike Kupris. The Chinese film, set in the Tang dynasty, is the story of the disintegration of the royal family.
On March 8, Justin Canzano will perform on saxophone, and the movie is “Jindabyne.” This Australian film is the story of a murdered Aborigine.
“Paprika,” a Japanese film, will be shown on March 22, and guitarist Terry Barnett will perform. The film is about the misuse of an experimental device that allows psychotherapists to enter their patients' dreams.
The series ends April 5 with “The Sky Turns,” a Spanish film. Stacey Burwick will perform on violin.
