Aim High With Your Advanced Skills

Analytical and quantitative skills are needed by a range of employers, and this need continues to grow. They know that critical thinking is an essential ingredient to their business success. Improve your value to employers by deepening your mathematics knowledge and leadership acumen. Another path you can choose is to solidify your background and prepare for a PhD program.

IUP offers two mathematics graduate programs. One is for those who want to develop their skills in the areas of traditional applied mathematics, operations research, and statistics. The second is for those who are currently teaching and want to increase their rank on the pay scale and responsibility in elementary and secondary schools.

    MS in Applied Mathematics

This program is perfect if you’re interested in a career in industry, government, or education. It’s also a great fit if you’re a secondary mathematics or science teacher wanting to gain a deeper understanding of how mathematics and statistics are used to solve applied problems.

In order to apply, you will need to have completed a calculus sequence and introductory courses in linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, and probability and statistics. Computer programming skill is also recommended.

    MEd in Mathematics Education

This unique program is designed for teachers, with online classes that enable you to hold your job while you earn your master’s. You have two tracks from which to choose: A Secondary Mathematics Education track, which is totally online, and an Elementary and Middle Level Mathematics Education Track, which includes online as well as face-to-face classes. The face-to-face classes are offered one evening a week to fit the schedules of those who are teaching. Whether you are interested in furthering your knowledge, working towards permanent certification, becoming a teacher-leader, or planning to eventually pursue a doctoral degree, the program prepares you to embrace the challenges of teaching mathematics to a diverse population of students in an ever-changing world.

For teachers in public schools, the program meets the credit requirements for Instructional Level II certification. However, it does not provide initial certification or grades 7–12 certification for those who hold a K-6 Level I certificate.
