The Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences is pleased to announce the winners of our department scholarships for the 2020-21 academic year.
Through the generosity of alumni, friends, and family, as well as grant-funded scholarships, the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences was able to award over $330,000 in scholarships to deserving students in all of our programs. Receiving the James A. Boytim, EdD Scholarship for Mathematics was Chloe Wilson, from Clymer, Pennsylvania (secondary mathematics education). The Boytim Scholarship is awarded to a senior in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences who is of good character and who demonstrates the promise of future success in the education profession.
Receiving the Roy A. Daugherty Scholarship, for students whose interests match those of Mr. Daugherty, are Alyssa Carne from Harmonsburg (mathematics-actuarial) and Felix Marquez from Philadelphia (mathematics-actuarial).
The recipient of the Tony and Carole Kuczinski Memorial Scholarship for Mathematics Education Majors is Rebecca Frederick, a student in the MEd elementary/middle level mathematics education program from Indiana, Pennsylvania.
The recipient of the Arthur G. Morrell Mathematics Memorial Scholarship (LINK) is mathematics major Elizabeth Lees from Ebensburg, Pa. The Morrell Scholarship is awarded to a mathematics major who reflects the character of Captain Morrell, a United States Marine pilot and an IUP football captain.
The James R. Myers Memorial Scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students in elementary education with a mathematics concentration or in middle level mathematics education This year's award goes to Hope Kiehl from Landisville, Pa. Hope is a family and consumer science education major with a minor in elementary and middle-level mathematics education.
The Merle Stilwell Scholarship for Mathematics, awarded to mathematics or mathematics education majors who demonstrate involvement in community service and are well-rounded, was awarded to Miranda Stiles, a middle level mathematics education major from Seward, and Rebecca Webb, a mathematics major from Kittanning.
The recipient of the Rebecca Stoudt Memorial Scholarship for Mathematics (LINK) is Jessica Jones, an applied mathematics and studio art major from South Park, Pa. The Stoudt Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate mathematics major with an outstanding academic record.
Ryan Olechovski received a scholarship from the Ken and Lois Widdowson Scholarship Fund for deserving mathematics majors from Indiana Area High School. Ryan is a secondary mathematics education major from Indiana, Pa.
Receiving Mildred M. Reigh Memorial Scholarships for those who exemplify excellence in or potential for excellence in mathematics teaching at the elementary or secondary level, are Roxanne Adamson from DuBois, Pa. (MEd elementary/middle level mathematics education); Mikayla Dokos from Homer City, Pa. (secondary mathematics education); Makenzie Fello from Leechburg, Pa. (secondary mathematics education); Rebecca Frederick, Meghan Grantz from Apollo, Pa. (MEd elementary/middle level mathematics education); Mary Kolojejchick from Fredericksburg, Va. (MEd secondary mathematics education); Sara Pawloski from Blakely, Pa. (MEd elementary/middle level mathematics education); Wendy Strunk from Colver, Pa. Serafini Outstanding Scholars Program for full-time undergraduate majors in mathematics or secondary mathematics education are Morgan Buterbaugh from Clymer, Pa. Receiving the Dr. Willard W. Hennemann, Jr. Memorial Math Scholarship for outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in elementary or middle school mathematics education are Kelsey Craig from Apollo, Pa. (early childhood/special education with a Minor in elementary and middle-level mathematics education); Deja Daley from Harrisburg, Pa. (middle level mathematics education); Janell Quint from Springfield, Va. (early childhood/special education with a minor in elementary and middle-level mathematics education); and Maria Schall from Ebensburg, Pa. (early childhood/special education with a minor in Elementary and Middle-Level Mathematics Education).
The recipients of the Ida Z. Arms Scholarship for Mathematics for outstanding students in mathematics or mathematics education are Grant Distefano from Black Lick, Pa. (middle level mathematics education); Mikayla Dokos, Makenzie Fello, Jessica Jones, Madilyn Ober from Commodore, Pa. (middle level mathematics education); Heidi Plant from Wexford, Pa. (MEd secondary mathematics education); Vincent Thompson from Indiana, Pa. (Mathematics); and William Welsh from Pittsburgh, Pa. (Middle Level Mathematics Education).
Braxton Dameron is the recipient of both the Barry Day Outstanding Computer Science Student Award, given in recognition of his achievements and contributions to the department, and an award from the James H. Maple Scholarship Fund. Braxton is a computer science, software engineering major from Home, Pa..
The Howard E. Tompkins Computer Science Scholarship was awarded to Maria Gracia Agudelo, a computer science, cybersecurity major from Bogot, Colombia. The Tompkins Scholarship is awarded to a full-time computer science female student with the highest overall grade-point average entering their junior year.
The recipients of the Computer Science Scholarship are Regina Korvah, a computer science, software engineering major from Oxon Hill, Md., and Neil Yoder, a computer science, software engineering major from Apollo, Pa.. Derek Waggle, a computer science, software engineering major from Apollo, Pa., is the recipient of the Computer Systems Scholarship.
The Department of Defense Cyber Scholarship Program is designed to effectively recruit qualified and high-achieving students in the Cybersecurity program. The Scholarships Creating Opportunities for Applying Mathematics (S-COAM) project at Indiana University of Pennsylvania seeks to increase the numbers of students pursuing mathematics degrees with a goal of establishing a supportive connection of graduate students with undergraduates through scholarship cohort activities.
