Where Stars Shine

Former New York Yankees’ stars Joe Pepitone and Ralph Houk will sign autographs on February 15, and former Pittsburgh Steelers’ star Mike Wagner and former Pittsburgh Pirates’ great Bob Friend will sign them the next day at the Harrisburg Area IUP Alumni Chapter’s 2003 sports card show.

The show is housed at the Harrisburg East Mall, near the I-83/Paxton Street Exit. Readers of IUP Magazine can order advance autograph tickets to be signed at the show or purchase autographs by mail on eight-by-ten color photos.

According to Carl Hisiro ’76, the show’s promoter, Pepitone starred with the Yankees in the 1960s and played on three World Series teams, including the 1962 series champion team. The three-time American League All-Star will sign autographs at the show for $15 each on eight-by-ten color photos, cards, or baseballs. Autographs on bats, helmets, and jerseys will be $20 each.

Houk managed one of the great all-time teams, the 1961 World Champion Yankees. Houk’s autographs will be $15 each on photos, cards, or baseballs and $20 each on bats, helmets, and jerseys.

Friend pitched for the Pirates from 1951 to1965, was a three-time National League All-Star, and played a prominent role on the Pirates’ 1960 World Series Champion team. Friend’s autographs will cost $10 each on flat items and $15 each on bats, helmets, and jerseys.

Wagner played safety for the Steelers from 1971 to 1980, including all four Super Bowl championship teams, and is a member of the Steelers’ Fiftieth Anniversary All-Time Team. His autographs at the show will cost $10 each on flat items and $15 each on footballs, jerseys, and helmets.

The sports card show will feature seventy dealer tables selling vintage and new sports cards, sports memorabilia and collectibles, and non-sports cards. The chapter will donate proceeds from the February show and from the autograph signings to the Foundation for IUP for the chapter’s scholarship endowment fund that benefits IUP students from the Harrisburg/York/Lancaster area. The chapter has donated more than $33,000 from previous card shows to the Foundation, including more than $24,000 to the scholarship endowment fund. The chapter raised more than $3,600 from last year’s show.

Mail-order prices (which include postage and handling) are $21 (Pepitone or Houk) and $16 (Friend or Wagner) for an eight-by-ten color photo supplied by the chapter. Those planning to attend the show to obtain autographs may order tickets in advance by sending a check made payable to Carl Hisiro prior to the show at 108 Nicolas Court, Harrisburg, PA  17110. For advance ticket sales only, a self-addressed, stamped envelope should be included with the order. Mail-order prices include return postage.

From previous shows, the chapter is also offering a limited number of autographs on color photos of former Yankees’ greats Bobby Richardson, Tommy Henrich, Gil McDougald, Tom Tresh, and Clete Boyer; former Pittsburgh Pirates’ great Vernon Law, and former Steelers’ star John Fuqua.
