As artificial intelligence becomes more common in teaching, learning, research, and daily work, IUP has updated several university policies to provide clearer guidance for responsible AI use. New AI language has been added to the IT Acceptable Use Policy, Information Protection Policy, and Data Classification Policy, complementing existing expectations in the Academic Integrity Policy.
Rather than creating a standalone AI policy, IUP incorporated AI guidance into its established framework. The updates reaffirm that expectations for acceptable use, data protection, academic integrity, and individual responsibility apply when AI tools are used. Users remain responsible for the accuracy and appropriateness of any AI‑supported content or decisions.
The updates also clarify expectations for handling university data. Information does not become less sensitive when processed or transformed using AI. Private or restricted data may not be used in public AI tools without explicit university authorization and safeguards. Any AI‑generated information containing such data must be protected to the same degree as the original information.
A Collaborative Approach
Faculty and staff from across the university contributed to the development of the updated language.
The ACPAC AI Subcommittee drafted the initial text. Members included Christopher Clouser, Benjamin Dadson, Todd Cunningham, Samuel Grieggs, Jacqueline McGinty, Scott Moore, Gian Pagnucci, Matthew Vetter, and Daniel Yuhas.
An ad hoc committee convened by Hilliary Creely provided additional review. Members included Frederick Adkins, Dana Driscoll, Soundararajan Ezekiel, Waleed Farag, Samuel Grieggs, Anson Long, Crystal Machado, Jacqueline McGinty, Kelli Jo Moran, David Myers, Matthew Nice, Kalani Palmer, Veronica Paz, Christian Pedersen, Kenneth Sherwood, William Schleicher, Matthew Vetter, and Daniel Weinstein.
The University Senate’s Library and Educational Services Committee endorsed the updates, and the Senate approved them on April 28, 2026.
Supporting Responsible AI Use at IUP
These updates are an early step in IUP’s broader work on artificial intelligence, one of the university’s 2026–27 Strategic Priorities. Efforts focus on AI literacy; governance and best practices for teaching and learning; AI in the curriculum; and the development of AI tools for operational efficiency.
A new FAQ is available to help faculty, staff, and students understand how AI relates to IUP’s IT and data policies. Community members are encouraged to review the updated policies and guidance:

Together, the updated policies and guidance provide a foundation for IUP’s continued work with AI, establishing clear expectations for responsible use while supporting the university community as the technology and its applications continue to evolve.
