On March 2, 2026, students from the IUP Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism, and Event Management program participated in an immersive Student Familiarization (FAM) Tour in Pittsburgh, gaining firsthand exposure to major event, tourism, and hospitality venues in the region.

This experiential learning opportunity was made possible through the support of Visit Pittsburgh, whose team played an instrumental role in coordinating tour logistics. The program extends its sincere appreciation to Natalie Weiss, destination engagement manager, and Amber Harkleroad, group tour sales manager, for their exceptional effort in organizing a seamless and valuable experience for all participating students.

Throughout the day, students explored a variety of event and hospitality venues across the city, each offering behind-the-scenes access and the chance to meet with industry professionals. The IUP program extends its gratitude to the following partners for welcoming students and providing informative tours:

  • David L. Lawrence Convention Center
  • The Westin Hotel Pittsburgh
  • Sheraton Station Square
  • Gateway Clipper
  • PNC Park

The group also enjoyed lunch at the Sheraton Station Square and attended an engaging industry presentation by Joyce Kramer, senior event planner at Highmark and vice president of membership for Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Pittsburgh Chapter. Her session provided valuable insights into career paths, professional development, and the evolving landscape of the meetings and events industry.

This FAM tour was coordinated on the student side by Nicole Clevenger, associate professor in the IUP Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism, and Event Management program and director of student involvement for the MPI Pittsburgh chapter. Her leadership ensured a meaningful and well-organized experience for all participants.

In addition to IUP hospitality students and MPI student members, the tour fostered collaboration by including students from Slippery Rock University and Point Park University. Bringing together students from multiple institutions created a shared learning environment that strengthened regional connections and showcased the vibrant career opportunities available within Pittsburgh’s hospitality and events sector.

The IUP Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism, and Event Management program is grateful to all participating partners and university collaborators for making this impactful learning experience possible. Opportunities like this directly support students’ professional growth, networking, and readiness to enter the dynamic hospitality industry.
