Each academic year, the School of Graduate Studies and Research awards two doctoral students with the Julius P. Filcik Doctoral Fellowship. Students must be nominated by a faculty member and must be a current graduate assistant or teaching associate in good academic standing.

The Julius P. Filcik Doctoral Fellowship Fund is designed to attract new students who demonstrate strong academic preparation, the potential for excellence in teaching and research, and the energy and intellect to contribute to the community of doctoral scholars at IUP.

In October 2022, the following doctoral students were selected for this prestigious fellowship:

  • Ragia Hassan, Curriculum and Instruction, DEd – nominated by Kelli Jo Kerry-Moran
  • Justin McDonald, Counselor Education and Supervision, PhD – nominated by Holly Branthoover

The life of Julius P. Filcik ’53 epitomized this university’s aspirations for its alumni. With a strong commitment to academic and moral excellence, he set high standards throughout his life, within his profession, and for IUP. This fund is dedicated in his memory and will permanently support the academic pursuits of doctoral students with the highest promise to fulfill these ideals.
