As we head into Halloween weekend and the end of Daylight Saving Time, the IUP Office of Emergency Management wants to remind all students, faculty, and staff to stay safe, stay alert, and be prepared!

👻 Halloween Safety Tips

  • Stay with friends. Travel in groups when attending events or walking at night.

  • Plan your route. Stick to well-lit, familiar areas and use campus sidewalks or paths.

  • Keep your phone charged. Make sure you can contact friends or emergency services if needed.

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid distractions like texting while walking or crossing streets.

  • If you see something, say something. Report suspicious activity to University Police at 724-357-2141.

  • Know your limits. If you choose to attend parties or gatherings, make safe decisions and look out for your friends.

  • Secure your residence. Lock doors and windows when leaving your dorm or apartment.

⏰ Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday, November 2, at 2:00 a.m.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night!

This is also a perfect time to review your emergency preparedness at home and on campus:

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if needed.

  • Check flashlights and emergency lights. Replace batteries or bulbs.

  • Review your emergency plan. Make sure everyone in your residence hall, apartment, or house knows where to go and who to contact in an emergency.

  • Update your emergency contacts in MyIUP and your phone.

  • Check your emergency kit. Include water, nonperishable food, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications.

  • Prepare for shorter days. Carry a flashlight or wear reflective clothing when walking or biking after dark.

Staying aware and prepared helps keep our entire campus community safe.
