Student Selected for Gilman and Freeman-Asia Scholarships for Study in South Korea

Khala Vines, a sophomore international studies and Asian Studies major who recently won a 2020 David L. Boren Scholarship for international study, has been selected for two additional international competitive study abroad scholarships: the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship and a Freeman Award for Study in Asia Scholarship.

IUP Student Selected for Boren Scholarship for Study in Korea

Khala Vines, a sophomore international studies and Asian Studies major, has been selected for a 2020 National Security Education Program David L. Boren Scholarship to study in South Korea. She is the third IUP student selected for a Boren scholarship.

East Asian Festival on November 3

The East Asian Festival, taking place in the HUB Ohio Room, is being held to promote unity and help spread information about the cultures that we have come to love. The event will include performances, cultural tables, traditional games, and lots of free food.

Summer Asian Language Scholarship Seeking Applications

This scholarship offers a grant of $500 towards a summer Asian language program overseas or in the U.S. for any level of language study. It is open to Asian Studies majors with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

New Japanese Course: Anime (Japanese Art of Cartooning)

The Japanese program is offering a new class, ASIA 281-002 Anime, in Fall 2013. Students will meet 3:30–4:45 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. This will count as an elective.

Liu Receives ACPAC Mobile Learning Initiative Grant

Shijuan Liu, Asian Studies, received the ACPAC Mobile Learning Initiative grant in spring 2013, which allowed her to purchase 10 iPad minis for her Chinese language courses in fall 2013.

Kim Wins Japan Foundation Grant

Yongtaek Kim received a grant from the Japan Foundation’s Institutional Project Support–Small Grant Program to hire faculty to teach introductory Japanese language classes and expand the program’s online presence.

On March 1–2, 2013, IUP will host the first Asian Studies Undergraduate Regional Conference. Undergraduate students from all disciplines are invited to present the results of their field or coursework-based research in the field of Asian Studies.

Students Jones, Wirtz, and Barr Win at Northeastern U.S. Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Students

Senior Jazminn Jones won second place and senior Courtney Wirtz and sophomore Christopher Barr won third place at the Chinese Proficiency Competition, held at St. Vincent College on March 24. Jones advances to the national finals, to be held at Pace University on April 7.
