Religious
behavior can be traced back far into our hunter-gatherer past. In this talk,
we'll discuss how anthropologists understand the phenomenon of religion, its
evolution through time, and the role it serves today. We’ll focus on how
it can be studied empirically, especially for cases in prehistory where we
cannot talk to religious participants. I'll introduce you to my research where
I reconstructed the organization of religious institutions in three very
different types of pre-Columbian societies and found a wide range of diversity
in the role religion played in everyday life.
