Indiana University of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce a new education partnership with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County that expands clinical training opportunities for students enrolled in IUP's Medical Imaging Bachelor of Science programs.
The newly finalized articulation agreement creates a 3+1 pathway that allows IUP medical imaging students to complete three years of required coursework on campus, followed by a 13.5-month clinical and academic experience in UMBC’s accredited diagnostic medical sonography program. Students who successfully complete the UMBC program will earn 32 transfer credits toward their IUP degree and graduate with a bachelor of science degree in medical imaging.
A Direct Path Into a High-Demand Health Career
Diagnostic medical sonographers are in high demand in hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers across the region, and this new partnership provides students with a clear pathway into the profession.
- Earn hands‑on clinical experience in a respected, accredited program
- Be academically prepared for national certification exams
- Receive a full year of supervised, competency‑based training
- Complete a bachelor’s degree with enhanced professional readiness
UMBC’s program begins each July and includes both classroom instruction and clinical rotations. Admission is competitive, and IUP will continue to support students through advising, prerequisite preparation, and application guidance.
Supporting Student Success
Throughout the process, IUP’s medical imaging faculty and program coordinator will support students with advising, transcript submission, and preparation for UMBC’s requirements. This comprehensive guidance helps students navigate the application process, understand prerequisite expectations, and stay on track for a smooth transition into the clinical training year.
Leadership Perspective
“This partnership represents an exciting step forward for our students and for the College of Health Sciences,” said Hilliary Creely, dean of the College of Health Sciences. “IUP already partners with several respected medical imaging programs across the region, and adding UMBC strengthens that network even further. This new collaboration increases our capacity to accept and support more students who are preparing for careers in high‑demand clinical fields. We are proud to offer another excellent pathway that leads directly to certification and employment.”
Expanding Capacity and Opportunity
IUP’s Medical Imaging program has a long history of partnering with accredited clinical sites to create multiple pathways into specialized areas such as sonography and nuclear medicine technology. The UMBC collaboration is a valuable addition that expands capacity for qualified students, helping more applicants secure clinical seats and complete their degree requirements on time.
This partnership strengthens IUP’s mission to prepare students for rapidly growing healthcare professions while ensuring access to high‑quality, accredited clinical training programs.
