    The American Language Institute (ALI) is IUP’s intensive English program. The ALI offers full-time, noncredit programs for international students and visitors.

    The ALI offers intensive programs each semester: fall, spring, and summer.

    Who Should Study at the ALI?

    Anyone who wants to learn English in a supportive, friendly environment with others from around the world will feel at home at the ALI.

    Only individuals with at least a high school diploma or an equivalent degree are considered for enrollment. Admission to the ALI does not constitute admission to IUP. Students who are also seeking provisional IUP admission can apply to the ALI Provisional program.  See our Student Stories to learn more!

    Programs of Study

    The ALI offers several programs to meet the diverse needs of international students:

    • ALI Full-time/English for Academic Purposes (EAP): This program is for students who want to improve their English skills for work, academic, or personal goals.
    • ALI Provisional (ALI-P): This program offers conditional admission for students who plan to pursue a degree at IUP. Students who meet all other requirements for admission can receive provisional acceptance to undergraduate and select graduate programs at IUP while they study at the ALI to meet English language proficiency requirements. 
    • Bridge: Advanced proficiency ALI students who receive approval to participate in the Bridge program can begin taking IUP credit-bearing courses along with ALI intensive English classes to facilitate their transition to university studies. Students can meet admission requirements for English proficiency through the Bridge program.
    • Special Programs (English for Specific Purposes and English for Visitors): These programs are available on demand. Universities and organizations can contact the ALI to create a course of study specifically designed to meet the groups’ schedule and language learning needs. These programs are typically offered during the summer and winter sessions.

    How to Apply

    All prospective students must complete an online application and submit the required documentation, including high school transcripts, passport, and financial affidavit. Visit the Admissions page to learn more about the application process.

    Costs and Tuition

    The ALI offers several different programs designed to meet students’ educational needs. The cost of the American Language Institute includes ALI tuition and mandatory IUP fees. Detailed cost information is available at the Office of the Bursar. Tuition and fees are subject to annual change. Students should also budget for living expenses. 

    Upcoming Activities

    Trips and activities provide opportunities to practice English outside the classroom, make friends, learn about local culture, and share your own culture. ALI students are encouraged to participate in activities and trips.

    SkillZone is IUP’s free drop-in tutoring center for all international students, including ALI, undergraduate, exchange, graduate, and visiting scholars. At SkillZone, students and scholars can access support to develop essential academic skills in a supportive environment.

    Conversation Partners

    International students are matched with U.S. students for weekly conversation sessions and special activities throughout the semester.

    International Friendship Program

    This program operates fall and spring semesters and brings together Indiana area families or individuals and international students who attend IUP.
