Your Chance to Contribute to Understanding Our Planet
Earning a degree in Earth and Environmental Science prepares you to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing our planet. Environmental geoscientists play a critical role in understanding and protecting our planet. They study Earth’s history to reveal patterns of change over time, helping us predict future environmental conditions. Their work is essential for managing natural resources like energy and water, mitigating natural hazards, and addressing the impacts of climate change and pollution. As human pressures on the planet intensify, the need for skilled geoscientists to guide sustainable solutions has never been greater.
Student Opportunities
Field experiences. Throughout the year, you’ll have access to both regional and national field explorations, giving you a chance to study a wide range of geological environments from the history of the Appalachians to the carbonate reefs of the Florida Keys to the volcanic eruptions of the Cascades.
Internships. IUP Anthropology, Geospatial and Earth Sciences has a strong internship program. The department has many professional contacts that you can take advantage of to obtain placements. Internships are learning laboratories where you can test your knowledge and skills working with professionals. They are a key to job placement and can provide excellent references necessary for a job search.
Scholarships and Awards. The Department of Anthropology, Geospatial and Earth Sciences is proud to support student success through a variety of scholarships and awards. These opportunities recognize academic excellence, fieldwork achievements, research contributions, and community engagement across our disciplines.
Student Organizations. The Department supports four student organizations and their activities. These include recreational outings, professional development, travel to conferences, and public outreach.
Laboratories. Hands-on learning is emphasized with a selection of laboratories that include the marine sediments laboratories, the geochemistry research laboratory, the paleontology research laboratory, the structural geology and tectonics laboratory, the planetary science laboratory, and the IUP planetarium.
Geology Faculty. Our full-time professors combine real-life experience in the field with a high level of scholarship. They are committed to developing close collaborative relationships with their students, involving them with their own research, introducing them to new experiences in the field, and helping them find the right track to pursue.
