Sign In More Securely. Sign In More Easily.

IUP is introducing synced passkeys as a new way to sign in to your university account.

A passkey is a modern authentication method that replaces both your password and traditional MFA push notification. Instead of entering a password and approving a sign-in request, you authenticate using the method already configured on your device, such as your fingerprint, facial recognition, or device PIN. Passkeys combine strong authentication and multi-factor authentication into a single, secure sign-in experience. Because the passkey is on your device and requires verification through biometrics or your device PIN, there is no password to remember and no push notification to approve.

With synced passkeys, your passkey can securely synchronize across your trusted devices through services such as Apple iCloud Manager (or sometimes called iCloud Keychain) or Google Password Manager. This allows you to use the same passkey from multiple devices without needing to register each device separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Use a Passkey?

Most people care about three things:

  • Is it secure?
  • Is it easier than what I use now?
  • What happens when I get a new phone?

A synced passkey addresses all three.

Why Is IUP Moving to Passkeys?

Higher education institutions continue to face phishing attempts and account compromise attacks that target faculty, staff, and students.

Synced passkeys provide a phishing-resistant authentication method that is both easier to use and more secure than traditional sign-in experiences.

Requirements for Using Synced Passkeys?

Passkey Synchronization Service

  • Apple iCloud Passwords enabled on Apple devices.
  • Google Password Manager enabled on Android devices and Chrome-supported platforms.

Supported Devices and Operating Systems

Your device must have security configured, such as:

  • Apple Face ID, Touch ID, or device PIN
  • Android biometric authentication or device PIN

Cross-Device Sign-In Requirements

When using a passkey stored on your phone to sign in on another device, such as a Windows laptop or desktop computer:

  • Bluetooth must be enabled on both the phone and computer.
  • The devices must be physically near each other.
  • Your phone will be used to verify your identity and authorize the sign-in.

This proximity check helps ensure that the person signing in is physically present with the device that holds the passkey.

Important Information

Synced Passkeys Are Currently Optional

Passkeys are currently available on an opt-in basis.

Faculty, staff, students, and other account holders are encouraged to enroll and become familiar with passkeys as IUP continues its transition toward phishing-resistant authentication.

During this transition period, users should maintain Microsoft Authenticator as an authentication method.
