The Biggest Benefit of Synced Passkeys
Most people replace their phone every few years.
With traditional authentication methods, device replacement often requires reconfiguration and re-enrollment.
A synced passkey is different.
Two major benefits of synced passkeys are recovery and synchronization. Because the passkey can be stored and synchronized through a supported passkey provider such as Google Password Manager or Apple Passwords, a synced passkey will be available when you migrate to a replacement device and recover your provider account.
Before Replacing Your Device
Before you trade in, erase, or reset your device:
Verify You Know Where the Passkey Is Stored
Examples include:
- Apple iCloud Passwords
- Google Password Manager
Verify Access to That Account
You should be able to sign in to the provider account associated with your passkey, i.e., confirm you can sign in to your Apple iCloud account or your Google account, etc.
Keep Another Authentication Method
If you have a second device to also store synced passkeys and/or Microsoft Authenticator, please set up those devices as well as authentication methods in your account.
After Receiving Your New Device
- Sign in to the synced passkey provider (i.e., Google or Apple).
- Complete the provider’s recovery or verification process.
- Allow synchronization to complete.
- Test your IUP sign-in.
- Confirm everything works before retiring the old device.
Important Reminder
The ability to restore a passkey depends on maintaining access to the account associated with the passkey provider (Google or Apple)
Always test access on your new device before removing access from your old one.
