Understanding Medical Imaging and Your Career Options
In this field, you'll learn to use the latest technologies to visualize the body's parts and organs and make observations that help doctors diagnose and treat patients. It's a field that covers a wide range of procedures and technologies, and it's changing all the time. You'll graduate with the knowledge to jump into your career as well as the skills to continue learning as technologies advance.
The Medical Imaging program offers you three possible tracks for your major. Work hard in any these three majors and look forward to the promising job growth and salary prospects in this field.
Nuclear Medicine Technology
- Use radioactive materials in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
- Educate patients on procedures and administer the procedures safely
- Work with nuclear medicine physicians as part of a healthcare team
Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Ultrasound)
- Use a transducer to send a stream of high-frequency sound waves into the body
- Analyze images resulting from the waves bouncing off internal structures
- Create images that aid physicians in diagnosing and treating medical conditions in areas such as the abdomen, breast, heart, blood vessels, and musculoskeletal system
Echocardiography
- Create 2-D and 3-D pictures of the heart through the use of high-frequency sound waves
- Work with others in a healthcare team to provide the best possible care for patients
- Technicians may specialize in adult echocardiography, pediatric echocardiography, or fetal cardiography

The foundation courses you'll take are the same for all three and include courses like Human Anatomy, Physics, Chemistry, Human Physiology, and Introductory Medical Microbiology. They're designed to give you the advanced academic background you'll need to be accepted into one of the medical imaging schools affiliated with our program. There, you'll do the clinical work for your specialty, setting yourself up to be highly competitive in the job market.
