For Prospective Freshmen

Admission Criteria

A student profile for a recent entering class for all IUP freshman was an average SAT score of 1000 (Mathematics and Critical Reading sections only) and an average cumulative high school grade point average of 3.2. There are no special admission requirements for acceptance into the nuclear medicine technology major. For more details about a recommended timeline for the application process and to apply, visit Undergraduate Admissions.

Living-Learning Communities

Medical imaging students are encouraged to join nursing, respiratory care, and medical technology students in a living-learning community located in the Suites on Maple East. This option provides an excellent opportunity to share living space with students who have similar interests and similar curriculum requirements.

Academic Support Services

The medical imaging curriculum includes many challenging courses. IUP offers walk-in peer tutors, special supplemental instruction tutoring sessions, and other support services which help students succeed and excel. For more detail, visit the Department of Developmental Studies. The allied health coordinator is the academic advisor for medical imaging students and can also assist with plans for academic success.

Progression Criteria

  • For admission to the Nuclear Medicine Institute or Diagnostic Medical Sonography programs at the University of Findlay, students are required to have a minimum of a C grade in specific priority courses and have all admission materials submitted by the deadline.

  • For admission to the Nuclear Medicine Department at the Community College of Allegheny County, students are expected to be successful in several priority science and math courses and have all admission materials submitted by the deadline.

Admission to either of the affiliation programs is competitive, and students are encouraged to maintain the highest grades possible to enhance chances for admission. IUP does not guarantee admission to a clinical program.

Special Requirements

Before starting the clinical year at one of the affiliating programs, students will need to meet special requirements that may include health screening and a criminal background check.

For IUP Students Who Want to Change Their Major to Medical Imaging

Students must have at least a 2.0 grade point average to be accepted into the medical imaging program. For more information about the program, progression criteria, and special requirements, and for assistance in developing a potential plan of study, contact the allied health coordinator.

For Prospective Transfer Students

Admission Criteria

Students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 from all post-secondary institutions attended. There are no special admission requirements for acceptance into the medical imaging program. For more details about the application process and to apply, visit Undergraduate Admissions.

Online Transfer Credit Evaluation System

The online transfer credit evaluation system is an excellent source to begin an assessment of which courses completed are equivalent to the courses required in the medical imaging curriculum. In addition, the allied health coordinator is available to assist in the preliminary planning process for transferring to IUP.

For Students Who Already Have a Bachelor's Degree

The deadline for applying to one of the clinical affiliates is nearly one full year in advance of admission. Prospective students must plan accordingly.

Individuals who have already earned one bachelor's degree may be admitted to the university with advanced placement.

  • To earn the second bachelor's degree, students must meet the remaining requirements for graduation specified for the medical imaging program, including the 12-month clinical year.

  • In some cases where the first degree is in a related field, students may only have a few remaining requirements to complete before beginning the clinical year.

Contact the Office of Extended Studies for application information. In addition, the allied health coordinator is available to assist in the preliminary planning process for earning a second bachelor's degree and beginning a career as a nuclear medicine technologist.
