Henry Wong DoePianist and IUP faculty member Henry Wong Doe will present a solo recital on Thursday, September 9, 2010. The recital will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of John Sutton Hall. Admission is free.

The program presents three sonatas from three contrasting periods: Classical, Romantic, and the twentieth century. The first half is composed of an early Beethoven sonata: Op. 10 No. 3. This will be followed by the First Piano Sonata by Argentinean composer Alberto Ginastera. Ginastera's composition, now a staple in the piano literature, was commissioned and premiered for the 1952 Pittsburgh International Contemporary Music Festival.

The program concludes with Franz Liszt's mighty B Minor Sonata, one of the pinnacle works of the Romantic piano literature.

Prize-winner of several major international piano awards, such as the Sydney (Australia), Rubinstein (Tel Aviv), and Busoni (Italy) competitions, Wong Doe first joined the IUP faculty last year and performed on several programs, including a solo recital in January and a performance in Heinz Hall as part of IUP Plays Pittsburgh.

A native of New Zealand, Wong Doe received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Juilliard School and has performed in major venues worldwide, including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv.
