Softball Earns First NCAA Tournament Berth in Five Years

The IUP softball team has received a bid to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region tournament and the fifth-seeded Crimson Hawks will take on No. 4 seed West Virginia Wesleyan in an opening round game Friday, May 14, 2010, at Bloomsburg. Game time is set for 1:30.

In the other opening round game in IUP's half of the subregional, host and top-seed Bloomsburg will play No. 8 seed Chowan. The other subregional in the Atlantic Regional will be held at California, with the No. 2 Vulcans playing No. 7 Fairmont State and Kutztown squaring off with Chowan in first round action.

The winners of the two subregionals will advance to the NCAA Super Regionals and play at the home of the highest remaining seed May 21-22. Each of the eight regional champions will move on to the College World Series May 27-31 at Heritage Park in St. Joseph's, Mo.

The Crimson Hawks enter the NCAA tournament with a record of 35-10, tying the 2001 team for the most wins in school history. IUP is making its first appearance in the tournament since 2005 and is in the field for the seventh time overall, having won nine postseason games in its previous six trips.
