The tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Atlantic Region tournament after defeating Shaw, 5-0, on May 6, 2010. However, the Crimson Hawks fell to top-seeded Slippery Rock in the semifinals. This was the team’s first selection to the NCAA Atlantic Region tournament since 2004.
Gavin Smith won medalist honors at the East/Atlantic Super Regional tournament May 5, 2010, leading IUP to a second place finish and third consecutive trip to the NCAA national tournament.
The Crimson Hawks had a team score of 904 to finish 11 strokes behind champion Concord. The top five teams earned berths to nationals May 18-21 in Noblesville, Ind., with four of the spots going to teams in the Atlantic Region.
Maddy Outman broke the school record in the heptathlon, qualified for two events at the NCAA outdoor track and field meet and became the first IUP athlete to win a Championship of America event at the Penn Relays last month in Philadelphia. This month, Outman, Brianna Liebold, and Laurie Ajavon all had NCAA automatic qualifying distances in the long jump while sweeping the top three spots, and Outman won two other events to lead the IUP track and field team at the Elliston Invitational at Lock Haven. The conference championships take place May 13–15, 2010, at West Chester followed by the NCAA meet May 27–29 in Charlotte, N.C.
Senior shortstop Paul Bingham, coming off a season which saw him rewrite the IUP record book, has been named the PSAC West Player of the Year, heading a list of nine team members chosen to the all-conference team.
Seven IUP softball players have been named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Central Division all-star team for the 2010 season, including PSAC Central Freshman of the Year Stefanie Poates.
Selected to the first team were sophomore first baseman Megan McCormick, junior rightfielder Kristen Tunno, junior designated player Kelsey Ferguson and junior pitcher Erin Holloway. Poates, who played third base for the majority of the season, was on the second team along with sophomore shortstop Marissa Leslie and sophomore centerfielder Monica Iachini. The team also has advanced to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament for the first time in five years.
