Dr. Jeffrey Larkin of the Department of Biology received an external award from the United States Forest Service in the amount of $359,000 for his project “Restoring Forests Using the Forest Reclamation Approach on Surface Coal Mines in Western Pennsylvania.”
This is a two-year project to study the tree seedling survival and growth on reclaimed surface mines in northcentral Pennsylvania. This work will target the reforestation of approximately 240 acres. The project will be conducted primarily on state managed property. Project partners include the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
