IUP junior Joe Rocco has been named the recipient of the NCAA Elite 88 Academic Award for Division II men’s basketball and was recognized at a banquet Monday, before the start of the Elite Eight tournament, which gets under way Wednesday, March 24, 2010, in Springfield, Mass.
The Elite 88 Award is presented to one person at each of the 88 national championships sponsored by the NCAA, based on undergraduate cumulative grade-point average. The recipient must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
Rocco, of Northern Cambria, has a 3.949 grade-point average through his first five semesters at IUP. He is a Biology major who plans on attending medical school following his graduation in May 2011.

In other news, junior forward Darryl Webb has added to his list of postseason honors with his selection to the sixteen-man State Farm Coaches’Division II All-America team, sponsored and voted on by the members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Webb, of Elkridge, Md., is the first IUP men’s basketball player named to an All-America team since Dennis Mims in 2002.
