The Lively Arts at IUP and Department of Music will present visiting artists Juan Hermida, cello, and Miso Ito, piano, as part of its next Sound Choices series in a concert titled “An International Exchange in Music.”

They will perform alongside IUP music faculty members Therese Wacker, flute, and Linda Jennings, cello. The concert will be presented on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of IUP’s John Sutton Hall.

Hermida and Ito are on the music faculty at the University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico. They will perform works by Mexican composers Arturo Marquez and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon and Japanese composer Michio Mamiya. Wacker and Jennings will join the duo for chamber works of Normon Dell Joio and Gian Carlo Menotti.

The Hermida-Ito Duo has been heard in the United States, Canada, Colombia, Japan, Italy, Central America, and Mexico. Ito has been a soloist with orchestras such as the Nagoya Symphony, the New Japan Symphony, and the Texas Christian University Orchestra. She has made concert tours in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and her native Japan.

In 2004, the duo presented its album Candelabra: Latin American Music for Cello and Piano, sponsored by Conaculta-Fonca. Since 1995, the Duo Hermida-Ito has provided intense pedagogic activity at the University of the Americas, Puebla. Performers, teachers, and parents of the pair are currently celebrating the duo’s twenty years as a musical team.

Ito graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tennessee and received master’s and doctorate degrees in piano performance from the University of Cincinnati.

Hermida is a soloist with major orchestras in Mexico, the TCU Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Philharmonia. He was awarded the Mozart Medal in 1999 from the Austrian Embassy, first prize at the first Carlos Prieto Cello Competition (1998) and the UNAM Cello Competition (1988). He holds a Master of Music degree and an artist diploma from the University of Cincinnati College–Conservatory of Music.

In addition to the concert on March 31, Hermida and Ito will also work with IUP music majors in master classes during their visit to IUP.

The concert is part of the IUP College of Fine Arts International Exchange Program. IUP Music Department faculty members Jennings, Wacker, and Christine Clewell initiated the exchange with presentations of a concert and master class at the University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico, in January of 2009.
