On Saturday, March 6, 2010, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., IUP at Punxsutawney will host the “Celebrate Local” Wine Tasting and Silent Auction at the Living Learning Center, West End Campus. The fundraising event will celebrate wines from local wineries, including Windgate Vineyards and Winery in Smicksburg, Evergreen Valley Winery in Luthersburg, the Winery at Wilcox in Wilcox, Walnut Hill Winery in Blairsville, and Starr Hill Winery in Curwensville.
Wine experts from each winery will be on hand to explain why certain wines are paired with particular foods and to answer your questions. At food stations featuring local cheeses, fruits, salads, pastas, tenderloin, and a wide array of desserts, different wines will be offered to taste as appropriate partners to the food being served.
Guests will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction of items donated by area artists and business owners. A featured item for the Silent Auction will be cooking lessons for four taught by IUP Academy of Culinary Arts award-winning Executive Chef Albert Wutsch, teaching how to make homemade pastas like linguine and ravioli along with the special sauces to accompany the pasta. Other great auction items include four tickets and a parking pass for a Pittsburgh Pirates ballgame, an overnight stay at the Marriott Inner Harbor with two tickets to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, a beautiful stained glass aeroscope from Gilson’s Glass, and a custom basket of wine-related items packaged with a Campbell Pottery chip and dip tray, wine glasses, and cheese knives from Fairlady and Company.
There are numerous other items donated by local artists, including a handmade custom jewelry, a nature photograph on canvas by Ron Juliette, an architectural photograph of local interest, a print of the Oliveburg School by Joanne Garrett, a custom-designed wooden table from studio furniture maker Michael Stadler, and a carved wooden sculpture from the Wood Wizard, Randy Rupert.
In addition to the silent auction, there will be a special live auction featuring IUP’s own Chef Bob Stevens, who has offered his expertise and talents to prepare and serve dinner in your home for four couples. IUP at Punxsutawney Acting Dean Dr. Raymond Beisel will be the celebrity waiter for the dinner.
Gift baskets filled with wine, gift certificates, and other specialty items will be available for raffle. Music for the evening will be provided by a local favorite, guitarist Terry Sabo.
Proceeds from this event will assist with building a component of the planned recreational facilities for more than 350 students enrolled at the IUP at Punxsutawney campus and the IUP Academy of Culinary Arts.
