Appalachia isn't widely regarded as a wellspring of African American music, much less a cradle of the blues. But with the release of Classic Appalachian Blues, a twenty-one-track set of studio and live recordings made over five decades, the people at Smithsonian Folkways make a strong case for why it should be.
