Return of the Biggest Loser

After a very successful first go-around, IUP’s Biggest Loser competition is back for the second time this school year. The weight loss contest, hosted by the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness in Zink Hall, has implemented some new and improved changes, including the option for personal training!

The contest is open to anyone who would like to join, and sign-up is only $15. Get ready to challenge yourself and have fun doing so!

It’s certainly not too early to get started working on that summer body, so stop by the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness next week—Monday, February 1, until Thursday, February 4, 2010—to sign up. Those who enter the competition are encouraged, but not required, to purchase a two-month promotional James Mill Fitness Center membership for a small additional fee of $20. The competition begins February 1, 2010, and lasts for eight weeks, wrapping up on March 29, 2010. The winner will receive a free one-year fitness center membership as well as a $50 gift certificate to Donatello’s Restaurant in Indiana, Pa.

To ensure a fair competition, we have implemented the use of the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), which accurately measures body fat percentage. The individual with the highest percentage of body fat lost during the eight-week competition will be determined the winner! The option for nutrition advice and counseling is also available, with the help of IUP’s dietetic interns, throughout the duration of the contest.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Start and end dates: Starting Monday, February 1, 2010 – Ending March 29, 2010
  • Sign-up: Will take place in the James Mill Fitness Center (second floor of Zink Hall) from Monday, February 1, until Thursday, February 4, 2010. This is when the BIA test will take place (normal attire may be worn). Please stop in during our operating hours to sign up.
  • Fitness Center Hours: Monday–Friday 5:30–8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m., 4:00–8:00 p.m. (Fridays: 4:00–6:00 p.m.; Saturdays: 9:00–11:00 a.m. Please stop by during these times to sign up February 1–4,2010.
  • Final testing will take place from March 29, until April 1, 2010. After all testing has been completed, the winner will be announced.
  • Personal training option. Please note: This is only an option, competitors are not required to take advantage of this service and may work out on their own. Student volunteers from the Health and Physical Education Department will be in charge of your training. Personal training appointments may not be available each time you are at the gym. Training times must be scheduled in advance and are only available when student trainers are scheduled to be on hand. Also, you may not have the same personal trainer throughout the competition. Please realize that this is a free service implementing undergraduate student volunteers, and, in rare cases, trainers may not be available during scheduled appointments. A student trainer is only available to those who sign up for the two-month membership package, in addition to the contest fee.
  • Cost of contest: $15

  • Promotional gym membership fee: $20 (two months) + $15 (contest fee) = $35 total

  • The fitness center membership will last for eight weeks during competition. The application fee will be waived; however, for those who choose to sign up for the fitness center after the contest is over, an application fee will be charged. You are not required to join the fitness center—this is only an option if you do not have anywhere to work out or are already a member at another gym.

We want you to join, so help make this event a continued success! Gather your friends and coworkers to join in on the fight against body fat and enjoy healthier living along the way.
