Jill Brady, assistant professor of Speech-Language Pathology in the Department of Special Education and Clinical Services, presented her research at the 2009 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention in New Orleans, La.
Her poster session was entitled “Syntactic Priming: A Learning Mechanism?”
Syntactic priming occurs when a previously processed syntactic structure facilitates processing of that syntactic structure. Several studies suggest that speakers tend to repeat structures that they have previously used or heard. Evidence also suggests that comprehension of syntactic structures is facilitated when the same structure has been previously encountered and that the influence of syntactic priming may be related to a long-term frequency-based learning mechanism for the comprehension of syntactic structures.
