IUP Magazine will be hitting mailboxes soon, but remember to check the magazine website for features available only on the Web. This month's IUP Magazine Web Exclusive focuses on IUP alumnus Mike Sherry ’90, founder and president of the Miracle League of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The Miracle League lets special needs children play baseball regardless of their ability. Sherry has worked for the past two years to bring the national organization to the Pittsburgh area. The league's efforts were rewarded with the grand opening of the Miracle League Field in May 2009.

“It’ll change your life, I guarantee it. It’s a wonderful, wonderful thing to see,” Sherry said in an interview featured in the Summer 2009 issue of IUP Magazine.

No baseball skills are required, and each team and each player always win. “Buddies” assist each player—volunteers age twelve and older who are trained in how to help the players, regardless of the child’s need.

Sherry and the others who helped build the field (thanks in part to a $200,000 pledge from the Pirates Charities, the philanthropic arm of the Pittsburgh Pirates) want to serve as many as possible of the estimated 90,000 disabled children who live in southwestern Pennsylvania.
