On Saturday, May 30, 2009, the second annual IUP/United Way of Indiana County Hawk It for Good event was held. Through donations from IUP students leaving campus at the end of the semester and donations from local community residents, the sale was a huge success. This year’s profit of $6,260 was double last year’s of $3,185.
Special thanks to event chairwoman Pat Leach and the seventy volunteers, many from IUP, who sorted, priced, and volunteered throughout the event. More than seventeen tons of usable items were saved from landfills and were made available for sale to people in the community to help clothe their families and furnish their homes.
IUP played a major role in this event, not only with the students donating items, but also by offering their services to deliver the items collected in the residence halls to the sale location, picking up trash, supplying tables, and providing security and volunteers.
The more than eight hundred pounds of food collected was donated to ICCAP, and, after the sale, remaining shoes were donated to Saving Soles, professional clothes to Attire to Aspire, jeans and other items to Back to School projects, bedding items to ICCAP, and the remaining items to Goodwill.
Stay tuned and look for the date for the third annual IUP/United Way of Indiana County Hawk It for Good event, to take place in late spring 2010!
