Several IUP athletes were able to celebrate success over the Memorial Day weekend.

On Friday, junior Gavin Smith became IUP’s first-ever NCAA individual national champion in golf at the Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Wash.

The national championship earned Smith an automatic berth on the Division II Ping All-America first team.

IUP finished twelfth, with a score of 1,211, matching the 1993 squad for the best team finish in sixteen years under head coach Fred Joseph.

Smith’s win at nationals came just a day after sophomore Nafee Harris claimed the national title in the long jump at the NCAA outdoor track and field championship in San Angelo, Texas.

Harris became the twelfth national champion in IUP track and field history and the first ever in a jumping event.

On Saturday, the final day of the NCAA track and field meet, Harris and five other IUP athletes earned spots on the All-America Team, including IUP’s first All-America relay team since 1977.
