This exhibit showcases the personal art collection of Irene Kabala, a professor in IUP’s Art and Design Department. Over a period of 12 years, Kabala has amassed an eclectic array of artwork from around the world.

The exhibit will be on display in the University Museum from February 11 to March 6, 2020. Kabala will be on hand at an opening reception in the University Museum on Saturday, February 8, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Admission to the exhibit and reception is free.

The exhibit features culturally diverse artworks that span multiple centuries, from the middle ages to today. Varied artistic media will be on display, including paintings, masks, fiber art, and metal work. Kabala notes that she is particularly “captivated by masks because of the transformative potential inherent not only in the artefacts but also in humanity.” Taken together, the exhibit is an expression of her life and imagination.

Kabala has been interested in art since childhood. She majored in painting at the Ontario College of Art (now the Ontario College of Art and Design). She graduated from the University of Toronto with majors in art history and medieval studies. Kabala focused on medieval art in graduate school, and earned a PhD in art history from the Johns Hopkins University.

Educational events and talks with Kabala will be scheduled throughout the duration of the exhibit.

The University Museum is located on the first floor of Sutton Hall. University Museum hours are:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday: 2:00–6:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: Noon–7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: Noon–4:00 p.m.

The Museum is closed Sunday, Monday, and university holidays.
