The creation of a sustainable, university-wide learning assessment plan at IUP was the featured topic of a concurrent session at the 2019 Middle States Annual Conference in Philadelphia. “Three Steps Toward Sustainable Assessment” was presented on Tuesday, December 10, by Director of Writing Across the Curriculum Bryna Siegel Finer (English Department), Director of Liberal Studies Edel Reilly (Mathematics Department), and Provost’s Associate Karen Rose Cercone (Geoscience Department).

The 45-minute presentation highlighted IUP’s progress toward sustainable, university-wide learning assessment.

The first step was taken by the Writing Across the Curriculum project, which encouraged departments to craft individual writing plans on their own timelines.

A similar model was followed by the IMPROVE project to assess program-level student learning assessment, resulting in two- to three-year cycles of assessment customized for each college or department.

The third step toward sustainability involved clustering of the Liberal Studies courses to enable university-wide undergraduate learning goals to be documented and assessed in successive annual cycles.

By giving programs the time needed to create more thoughtful assessments and collect better data, this gradual approach has minimized the burden of assessment work while maximizing its benefits at IUP.
