“As the first African American woman President at PGCC, I asked her if she ever thought she’d be a college president when a little girl. Dr. (Charlene) Dukes said, “Absolutely not.” Retiring soon after 13 years leading the college, she knew when little that, “College was in our future because our parents always talked about that." ... Shortly after, Dukes reenrolled at IUP in 1976-77 and finished her English degree. This time she worked full-time and went to school full-time, a real triumph considering the time period.”
