Department of English professor Tim Hibsman presented his paper titled, “Maritime Magic: Nautical Inspired Comics, Literature, Film and Gaming” at the 2019 Mount Aloysius College Charity/Comic Con Conference on November 9, 2019.

The abstract of the article:

Writers have long found the sea and the human interaction a cause for wonder and reflection. This presentation will provide a variety of film, literature, comics and gaming examples in which the sea acts as the setting, a body of symbolism, a mystery, the agent of divine wrath, a human challenge, a means of escape, and a reason to reflect on the human relationship to nature.

Comparative relationships will be examined between: literature/comics, film/reality and words/images/sound. In addition to sight the audience will also be asked to use hearing and other senses to bring the maritime concepts to life.

“My soul is full of longing for the secret of the sea, and the heart of the great ocean sends a thrilling pulse through me.”

― Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
