This is part of #EberlyDoesSports, a series from the IUP Eberly College of Business and Information Technology that focuses on business majors who play team sports, club sports, or are involved in sports at a community or individual level.
McKenna Keffel plays on the IUP soccer team and is a marketing major. “I chose IUP and the Eberly College of Business not only for soccer, but their accredited business program that is top-notch. My education is very important to me. I knew that IUP would
challenge me not only in my athletic career, but along with my academic career. As a marketing major, I knew that the Eberly College of Business and the professors would prepare me for my future endeavors when I graduated,” she said.
McKenna is from a small suburb outside of Pittsburgh called Belle Vernon. She first came to know of IUP from getting recruited for soccer, then went on her first visit and knew IUP was a perfect fit for her.
While studying within Eberly, McKenna seems to have had great experiences. “My experiences while studying in the Eberly College of Business have been richly awarding. All of my classes I have taken have challenged me academically and have provided me with
a firm foundation that will enable me to excel in the business world upon graduation. My professors and advisor have been extremely supportive; they are always offering a helping hand with any problems I have faced along the way. I wouldn’t be able
to succeed without the support I have received from the staff at Eberly.”
McKenna has been playing soccer since she was four years old. As she got older, her passion grew and she wanted to be more competitive, so she started playing for a travel team with all her best friends. She played for Belle Vernon Area High School along
with playing for Century United in the post season.
McKenna explained, “Playing sports my whole life has shaped me tremendously into the person I am. Because of soccer, I have learned good work ethics, time management, and what true dedication looks like. All of these traits have been instilled in me throughout
my entire life playing soccer. Currently, I am in the final stages of an internship opportunity with Northwestern Mutual in downtown Pittsburgh in the Marketing Department. Wherever my future may lead, I know IUP and the Eberly College of Business
has prepared me to succeed in life.
“A quote that I live by is, ‘There is no substitute for hard work. Never give up. Never stop believing. Never stop fighting.’ There are no shortcuts to success. It takes full dedication to your craft, whatever that may be. Throughout my time at IUP, I
have faced many adversities. However, by reminding myself of this quote, I know that with each difficulty in life I have gotten stronger. Through my challenges, I have only gained a sense of confidence and empowerment to keep moving forward, and
to ‘never stop fighting.’”
The #EberlyDoesSports series focuses on business majors who play team sports, club sports, or are involved in sports at a community or individual level.
Associate Dean Cyndy Strittmatter is overseeing the project. “We are proud of our students who balance their academics with extracurricular activities and recognize the commitment that it takes to excel at all levels. We look forward to sharing their accomplishments with the IUP community and beyond. While this series focuses on athletes, there will be other special series that recognize the broad range of interests and activities of our business students,” said Strittmatter.
