Tim Hibsman (English Department) presented his paper “Hope, Healing, and Competition through Sports Film and Literature” at the 2019 EAPSU (English Association of Pennsylvania State Universities) Conference at Mansfield University on Oct. 25, 2019.

Abstract

Competition and striving for success are key concepts in almost any sport. These concepts are often the key focus; but there is another, more personal, side to the players, coaches, and opponents. Team sports often have close connections between the players. Even with opponents there is a mutual respect for talent, strategy, and the winning spirit. One of the greatest lessons in sports is how to deal with failure and loss. How do sports bring people together? How does an athlete overcome injuries? How does comradery extend off the field? Videos and reading will display compelling and inspiring examples that can motivate conference participants to implement in their classrooms. Using sports as a metaphor is a powerful tool in the classroom.
